NBN slow at night? Here's why — and what to do.
Your NBN feels fast during the day but crawls to a halt in the evening, especially between 7 pm and 11 pm. Streaming buffers, video calls drop, and downloads take forever.

See our plansWhy this happens
- Network congestion — your RSP has oversold bandwidth on your access node
- Your router is throttling traffic to manage heat after running all day
- Background downloads (Windows Update, game patches) are running
- CVC congestion at your RSP's point of interconnect (pre-July 2026)
How to fix it — step by step
-
1. Run a speed test at 10 am and again at 8 pm
Use fast.com or speedtest.net. If daytime is fast and evening is slow, the problem is your ISP's network, not your line or router.
-
2. Restart your router
Power off for 30 seconds, then back on. This clears the router's memory and can recover lost speed.
-
3. Check for background downloads
On Windows: Settings → Windows Update. On PlayStation/Xbox: check queue in the console settings. Pause anything downloading.
-
4. Connect via ethernet cable
Wi-Fi adds latency and drops speed, especially with thick walls. Plug your laptop or TV directly into the router for a clean test.
-
5. Ask your ISP for their Typical Evening Speed guarantee
If daytime speeds are fine but evenings are consistently slow, your ISP is congested. Ask them what Typical Evening Speed they guarantee and whether it matches your experience.
