NBN Help

NBN box or modem showing a red light — what it means.

The light on your NBN Connection Box (NTD/NCD) or your router is red or orange instead of the usual solid green or white.

Why this happens

How to fix it — step by step

  1. 1. Identify which device has the red light

The NBN box (mounted on your wall) and your router are separate devices. A red light on the NBN box means the problem is with the NBN line itself. A red light only on the router usually means it can't reach the NBN box or the internet.

  2. 2. Restart the NBN box

Unplug the power from the NBN box, wait 60 seconds, plug back in. Wait 5 minutes for it to fully reconnect before judging whether it helped.

  3. 3. Check cables

Make sure the ethernet cable between the NBN box and router is firmly plugged in at both ends.

  4. 4. Check for outages

Look at your ISP's outage page. A red light across a neighbourhood is usually a node or fibre cut.

  5. 5. Call your ISP

If the NBN box won't come good after a restart and there's no outage, your ISP needs to run a remote line test and potentially book a technician.
