NBN keeps dropping out? How to find and fix the cause.
Your NBN connection drops randomly — sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes minutes at a time. The router light goes red or orange, then recovers without you doing anything.

See our plansWhy this happens
- Faulty cable between your NBN equipment and router
- Loose or corroded phone line (FTTN/FTTB/FTTC connections)
- Overheating NBN Connection Box or router
- ISP authentication issue causing repeated re-connections
- Line fault between your premises and the NBN node or pit
How to fix it — step by step
-
1. Check all cable connections
Unplug and firmly re-plug the ethernet cable between your NBN Connection Box (NCD/NTD) and your router. Check the phone line if you have FTTN or FTTC.
-
2. Check for overheating
Feel the NBN box and your router. If either is hot to touch, move them somewhere with airflow. Don't stack equipment.
-
3. Note the pattern
Keep a log of when it drops. If it's always at the same time or during rain, that's a strong signal of a line fault — call your ISP for a fault investigation.
-
4. Try a different ethernet cable
Cables fail. If you have a spare, swap it between the NBN box and router.
-
5. Log a fault with your ISP
If dropouts persist, your ISP can run a line test remotely and escalate to NBN Co for a technician visit if needed.
