Why this happens

How to fix it — step by step

  1. 1. Be home for the full appointment window

NBN Co books 4-hour windows. The technician can arrive any time in that window. If nobody is home, the appointment is cancelled and you'll need to rebook — often weeks away.

  2. 2. Decide where you want the NBN box

For FTTP and HFC, you can choose where the box is mounted inside. Near a power point, in a central location for Wi-Fi coverage, is ideal. The technician will run a cable from outside to that point.

  3. 3. Prepare access

The technician needs access to inside your home and sometimes the roof space or external walls. Clear the area around where the box will be mounted.

  4. 4. Check what's included

Standard installs are free. If your home needs more than 40 metres of internal cable, a new wall penetration, or work in your roof cavity, additional charges may apply — your ISP should advise in advance.

  5. 5. Test the connection before the technician leaves

Once the box is installed, ask the technician to confirm the signal light is green. Your router still needs to be configured by your ISP before you're online.
