NBN drops out when it rains — what's happening?
Your connection is reliable in dry weather but cuts out or slows right down whenever it rains. This is a classic sign of a specific type of line fault.

See our plansWhy this happens
- Water is getting into a pit, junction box, or cable joint underground
- Corroded connections on the copper tail (FTTN/FTTC/FTTB services)
- The cable sheathing has cracked, letting moisture change signal properties
- NBN Fixed Wireless signal is impacted by heavy rain (rare but possible)
How to fix it — step by step
-
1. Confirm the rain correlation
Next time it happens, note the exact time and weather conditions. If it recovers once things dry out, this is almost certainly a moisture fault on the line.
-
2. Log a fault with your ISP
Report it as a rain-correlated fault. Give the ISP the dates and times it happened. They can run a line test remotely.
-
3. Ask for NBN Co escalation
Rain faults are line infrastructure issues — your ISP escalates to NBN Co for a technician to inspect the pit or cable on your street.
-
4. Keep the fault open until NBN Co inspects the infrastructure
Rain faults can be intermittent and hard to catch remotely. If the ISP's line test shows nothing, ask them to keep the fault open and escalate again after the next rain event.
Still having trouble?
If none of these steps resolve the problem, it may be an issue with your current provider. HIT Pacific offers transparent pricing, faster fault response, and local support.
