IPv6 tunneling — what it is and why you don't need it.

  1. 1. What IPv6 tunneling is

    A tunnel service gives you an IPv6 address range and an endpoint to connect to. Your router wraps IPv6 packets inside IPv4 and sends them to that endpoint. The endpoint unwraps the packets and forwards them onto the native IPv6 internet. From the destination's perspective you have IPv6 — but the path from your home to the tunnel endpoint is still IPv4.

  2. 2. The latency problem

    Tunnel endpoints are typically located in the US or Europe. Every IPv6 request from Australia must travel to the tunnel endpoint first, then to the destination. For a destination in Australia, you're adding a full international round trip. Native IPv6 goes directly from your router to the destination — no extra hops, no added latency.

  3. 3. The reliability problem

    With a tunnel, your IPv6 connectivity depends on the tunnel broker staying operational. If the tunnel service has an outage, your IPv6 goes with it — even though your actual internet connection is fine. Native IPv6 has no third-party dependency and is only as reliable as your ISP's own network.

  4. 4. The complexity problem

    Setting up and maintaining a 6in4 tunnel requires router configuration, periodic re-authentication with the tunnel broker, and ongoing awareness of when the tunnel is or isn't working. Native IPv6 requires only DHCPv6-PD — the router handles everything automatically after initial setup, with no tunnel to manage.

  5. 5. The real fix

    IPv6 tunneling is a workaround for ISPs that haven't deployed native IPv6. The correct solution is an ISP that provisions IPv6 on every plan.
