How to enable IPv6 on your home router

If your ISP supports IPv6 but your devices are still showing a regular IP address, the fix is almost always a setting buried in your router. Two things need to happen: your router must request an IPv6 address block from your ISP, then share it across your home network — and most routers don't do either automatically out of the box.

How to fix it — step by step

  1. 1. First: confirm your ISP actually provides IPv6

    Visit test-ipv6.com on any device and check your score. If you score 0 and your ISP has confirmed IPv6 is included on your plan, the problem is your router configuration — keep going. If you're not sure whether IPv6 is on your account, ask your ISP before changing any router settings.

  2. 2. Set your router's WAN IPv6 mode to DHCPv6-PD

    Log into your router's admin page — usually at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in a browser. Find the WAN or Internet settings and look for an IPv6 section. Set the IPv6 connection type to "DHCPv6" or "DHCPv6-PD" (also called prefix delegation — this is what lets your router collect a block of IPv6 addresses from your ISP). Do not choose "SLAAC" or "Static" for the WAN connection type.

  3. 3. Turn on Router Advertisements on your local network

    Even with the WAN side working, your phones and laptops won't receive IPv6 addresses unless your router actively tells them about it. In your router's LAN or IPv6 settings, look for "Router Advertisement", "RA", or "SLAAC" and switch it on. Think of this as your router announcing to every device: IPv6 is available, here's how to get one.

  4. 4. Test and read the result

    Visit test-ipv6.com on a connected device. A 10/10 score means it's fully working. A partial score usually means Router Advertisements aren't reaching your devices — revisit Step 3. A score of 0 means the WAN connection from Step 2 isn't established — double-check that setting, or contact your ISP to confirm IPv6 is active on your account.

  5. 5. If you can't find the DHCPv6-PD setting

    Some routers — particularly those supplied by ISPs or made before 2018 — don't support prefix delegation at all. If the setting isn't there after exploring every menu, a router upgrade is the practical fix. Any current Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6, or Wi-Fi 7 router supports prefix delegation without exception.

  6. 6. Buying new hardware? Check for IPv6 support before you buy

    If you're shopping for a new router, look for "IPv6 ready", "DHCPv6-PD", or "prefix delegation" in the spec sheet.
