Do I have IPv6 on NBN? How to check.

Most Australian NBN customers don't have IPv6 — and many don't know it. Australia is one of the slowest developed countries to roll out native IPv6 to home internet subscribers. Here's how to find out in under a minute, and what to do if the answer is no.

Why this happens

Most Australian ISPs don't provide native IPv6 to home customers
Your router may not be configured for IPv6 even if your ISP supports it
IPv6 must be provisioned by your ISP — you can't add it yourself
Some ISP-supplied modems actively block IPv6 pass-through

How to fix it — step by step

1. Test right now at test-ipv6.com
Visit test-ipv6.com on any device connected to your home network. It gives a score out of 10. A score of 10/10 means full native IPv6. A score of 0 means your connection is IPv4-only — and you're behind CGNAT like most Australian NBN customers.
2. Cross-check with Google's IPv6 test
Visit ipv6test.google.com. If the page says 'Yes, looks like you're using IPv6 already' your ISP is provisioning it. If it expresses doubt about your readiness, your ISP isn't provisioning IPv6 on your service.
3. Check your router's WAN status
Log into your router admin panel (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1). Look at the WAN or internet status page. If you see an IPv6 address starting with 2 (like 2001:...) alongside your IPv4 address, your router has a native IPv6 connection.
4. Ask your ISP directly
Contact your ISP and ask: 'Is native IPv6 included on my plan?' Many Australian ISPs don't offer it at all, or offer it only on specific plans or on request. The honest answer tells you whether router configuration can help, or whether the limitation is upstream.
5. If you don't have IPv6
The only way to get native IPv6 is an ISP that provisions it. Tunneling workarounds (like 6in4 tunnels) exist but add latency, complexity, and a third-party dependency — native is always better.
